May 16, 2008 Featured Artist: Joseph G. Smith

Joseph’s fascination with color has been the constant throughout his artistic career. During his schooling at Kansas University, he drew largely from the figurative work of German Expressionists, the Mexican muralists and the Post-Impressionists such as the Fauvists. Joseph spent 10 years in San Francisco before being drawn to Colorado by the mountains on the horizon.

The Rocky Mountains are now his subject. It is his goal to infuse his painting with the awe he feels while gazing at the horizon by accentuating color and using bold strokes to create a sense of movement. He enjoys the juxtaposition of plains, mountains, water or even sand dunes – each evokes a different palate, texture and form. His paintings are an exploration of these layers and their interaction with one another.
